CE Compliance

Machinery CE Certification

The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC makes the CE mark mandatory for machinery placed on the EU market. Manufacturers must prepare a technical file, complete a conformity assessment and issue an EC Declaration of Conformity before the equipment can be sold in the EU.

What the CE mark means for machinery

The CE mark is regarded as the passport that allows a manufacturer to enter the European market. Products bearing the CE mark may be sold in every EU member state without having to meet each state’s individual requirements, allowing goods to circulate freely within the EU. Products without the CE mark may not be placed on the EU market. Where a product already bearing the CE mark is found not to meet safety requirements, it may be ordered to be withdrawn from the market; continued violation of the CE marking rules may lead to restrictions on or a ban of access to the EU market, or forced withdrawal. The CE mark is therefore a mandatory requirement for products sold into Europe.

Project flow

The manufacturer submits a preliminary application, orally or in writing.
The applicant provides product descriptions and related information; a quotation is confirmed and a service contract is signed.
The first payment is made, and the project is opened within one working day of receipt, after which a professional engineer contacts the client.
The application form is completed, and the relevant documents and a sample machine are submitted.
Product testing and corrective work are carried out.
The engineer prepares the risk assessment documentation, the technical construction file (TCF) and product images for submission for EU review.
Technical file review covers whether the file is complete and whether it is written in an official Community language (English, German or French).
If the technical file is incomplete or not in a required language, the applicant is notified to make improvements.
The CE certificate is issued and the CE mark is affixed.
Mandatory requirement. The CE mark is a compulsory certificate for products sold in Europe. Without it, products may not be placed on the EU market.
