What the Measuring Instruments Directive covers
The Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2004/22/EC was notified in the Official Journal of the EU on 30 April 2004 and became mandatory from 30 October 2006. It is the EU regulation for the supervision and management of measuring instruments, and it defines the new approach standards for legal metrology products, the conformity assessment procedures and the implementation deadline. It covers instruments such as automatic weighing instruments, fuel dispensers, length and volume measuring instruments, water meters, electricity meters and gas meters. The MID allows a manufacturer to obtain a certificate valid across the whole of Europe and provides manufacturers with a range of conformity assessment routes for access to the European market. The directive defines ten categories of measuring instruments.
